Rocky Shoals Spider Lily Bloom with Zack Gross

Segment 3, May 20th, 2023

We have a famous bloom of flowers that happens once a year in the Carolinas.  The reason it is famous?  It is because it is one of the world’s largest blooms of the Rocky Shoals Spider Lily.

This plant loves the free-flowing, shallow-water, that is in this part of the Catawba River.

Every mid-May & June, Landsford Canal State Park becomes the epicenter of flower, wildlife, water & history lovers.  This 448-acre SC State Park, located in Chester County is located one hour south of Charlotte.

Park manager, Zack Gross, joins the program to Continue reading Rocky Shoals Spider Lily Bloom with Zack Gross

Show Recap & Black Bass Slam in SC

Segment 4, May 13th, 2023

Special thanks to Alen Baker of the Fly Fishing Museum of the Southern Appalachians & Allyn Morton from Appalachian Trail Days for joining the program this week.

One announcement:
The SCDNR Black Bass Slam is being promoted & celebrated by the state of SC.  The goal is getting people to fish more places in the state while pursuing other species of fish.  The four targets are Largemouth, smallmouth, redeye, & spotted bass.

Participants must email photos of the fish from the side & a pic of themselves with the fish.  Each submission must include date, location, angler contact info & your fishing license number.  This can be sent to SCBassSlam@dnr.sc.gov

Check out this link for more info; Black Bass Slam (sc.gov)

The Carolina Outdoor producer, TJ, thinks that an 8-weight fly rod in Charlotte would be perfect to pursue all four of the black bass species.

Wardrobes for the podcast host are brought to you by the outdoor store in Charlotte, Jesse Brown’s Outdoors.  Bill Bartee was wearing Mountain Khaki pants from Jesse Brown’s along with his Free Fly Shirt in Charlotte & Jesse Brown’s Leather Patch Hat.  His performance underwear? Worn just for this performance & from the other side of the store, the fly shop in Charlotte.

Turkey Season Advice with James Buice

April 22nd, 2023 Segment 2
The Carolina Outdoors is always in season but Wild Turkey aren’t.  Lucky for us, both Carolinas are open with Turkey season, & Bill Bartee speaks with sportsman, James Buice.

Buice talks about the weather’s affect on the gobbling activity & encourages hunters to be patient because the birds are there.
He also tells hunters to be ready to be mobile.  Sitting & waiting at this point in the season is not the answer.

Bartee asks about over-calling birds & Buice says that he believes in calling because it helps strike up a conversation with the bird.
During the conversation, with James waiting to catch a plane for a New Mexico-turkey hunting trip, he speaks of the western Meriam sub-species versus what we have in the Carolinas, with the Eastern sub-species of turkey.

Rise from Collapse with Russ Van Buren

April 15th, Segment 3, 19:50

Almost everyone on the planet over the age of thirty remembers where they were on September 11, 2001.  The day that a horrific terror attack took the lives of over 3,000 people at the World Trade Center (as well as, Pennsylvania & Washington, D.C.)

Russ Van Buren remembers.  Here with Carolina Outdoor host, Bill Bartee, he previews his story of that beautiful, September morning, that became tragic.  He describes his witness to the attack & had an upfront seat to the collapse of the towers.
Powerless, helpless, & hopeless are the emotions that we all felt that day. Van Buren even more so.  He tells his story of repressed memories & emotional scarring while on the search for insight, wisdom, & healing.
In fact, the day that he went to have his car serviced & unexpectedly poured his soul out to uninterested strangers.  However, he found that others that had eavesdropped were profoundly affected enough for a hug. He’ll speak on what he discovers about himself & others regarding honesty, kindness, & the compassion of others.

Jesse Brown’s Outdoors is excited to welcome Russ Van Buren to the Storyteller’s Stage.  His story is an example that sometimes our adventures are not chosen by us.  “Rise from Collapse” begins in tragedy but Russ helps lead us all to a place of love & healing.
