Year of the Trail in North Carolina

Segment 3, June 10th, 2023

Palmer McIntyre joins the Carolina Outdoors to talk about the 2023 Initiative, Year of the Trail in North Carolina.  The 2023 NC Year of the Trail celebrates the network of trails that reside in all 100 counties of the state.  McIntyre states that the Great Trails State Coalition led the initiative and it was passed in the General Assembly to recognize the different trails that we have.

McIntyre explains that trails can be something that we hike, pedal, run, walk, paddle, or ride (a horse).  They can be paved or unpaved & include blue ways.  They also aren’t just for recreation.  Many people utilize trails to help escape traffic & as a means of affordable travel.

The below information comes from the website:

Goals for NC Year of the Trail:

  • Inspire people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds to try trails,
  • Demonstrate the importance of trails to elected officials.
  • Boost outdoor recreation tourism across the state through Year of the Trail events in all 100 counties.
  • Promote safe and responsible use of trails, with the Outdoor NC Principles.
  • Advance diversity and inclusion on trails.
