Segment 3, March 23rd, 2024

Many times on the Carolina Outdoors we talk about how the outdoors helps heal.  Whether it being taking on the Appalachian Trail after a job loss or divorce.  Maybe it’s taking on Kilimanjaro or another tall bucket-list mountain after a cancer diagnosis. Mille’s Creation of Flies with Mille Douglas

Segment 2, July 29th, 2023

Fly Fishing is a sport that Jesse Brown’s & the Carolina Outdoors helps educate, outfit, & promote.  However, there is a complementary sport to fly fishing that involves creating the flies.  Mille Douglas’s husband of fifty years was an angler but she never took it up.  She’d go with him but spent her time reading a book.

She was already a creator & artist as a quilling artist.  Once her son-in-law saw some of her creations, he encouraged her to take up the sport of fly tying.  This encouragement led her to YouTube, watching videos, & essentially enabled her to self-teach herself.

Mille began tying flies & started Mille’s Creations.  She has received materials from her son-in-law, from Christmas gifts, & from veterans that she’s tied.  She’s also used materials found around the house.

Through her efforts, Project Healing Waters Chapters around the United States have received flies from Mille.  She goes by the artistic expression that there are no rules.

Douglas has not taken up the sport of fly fishing yet. Yet over 7,000 flies have been hand-tied by her.  None of them are alike.  But she has a guarantee “My flies are guaranteed to catch fish!  I don’t guarantee when.”
