Travelling with Lighweight Backpacks & the Importance of Trekking Poles with Michael Smith

Segment 2, July 8th, 2024

Travelers are crossing the globe and stopping by the Charlotte outdoor store, Jesse Brown’s to outfit. Some of the items that people are taking may not surprise you at all. A small, light hiking pack is almost a must. They’re great for using as a personal bag for an airline flight but also a super piece on a hike (local or international). It can carry water bottles, rain coat, personal items and mobile phone.

Michael Smith from Adventure Marketing Group joins the program to talk packs and how impactful the right one can be for a trip.

Smith shares that “less is more” & the mantra “that you always need enough.” Packing smaller helps for more comfortable travel by staying within a 30 Liter Pack or less.

During the interview we learn what the best pack is for a travel trip. A hiking trip always requires and great pack but a lot of people are coming through Jesse Brown’s for trips that are not requiring carrying a tent, sleeping bag, pad or items like that. They are staying in hotels, resorts, & lodges during their vacation to western NC, the American west, or even a walking tour in Europe. They still need a pack, just a lower capacity.

Things to look for: hip belt, hydration pocket, compact, & ease of travel at airport or train station

The other item that is one of the most impactful items for a walk or hike but many times overlooked is the trekking pole. “You’ll need these for stability & support”, Smith explains.  They help from your feet, your ankles, knees, hips, & back.  They’re also great for efficiency during a walk, hike, or trek.

Reminder that trekking poles cannot be carried onto an airline but can be checked within our checked luggage or duffels.

The interviewer hiked through Studio D with his Leki Trekking poles from Jesse Brown’s & was wearing his Oboz hiking shoes from Jesse Brown’s.

Thanks for Michael Smith for his appearance on the Carolina Outdoors.
